But it wasn't until Spanish explorers arrived at the native settlement in the late 17th century that the area began to be referred to as San Antonio (the explorers first arrived on the Feast Day of St. Anthony).
Fortunately, many historical landmarks are still standing today as a reminder of the city's storied history. Historical stone church Mission Concepcion looks almost as good as it did when it was built two centuries ago. The San Fernando Cathedral, also built 200 years ago, still serves as a cathedral to this day.
San Antonio is a big city, the seventh most populous in the US, with a thriving downtown area and scores of different neighborhoods, each special in its own way. The historic district of Market Square, located downtown, is a hit with residents and tourists alike. Mi Tierra Cafe Y Panaderia has been a mainstay in the neighborhood for 75 years, serving authentic Mexican fare.
Of course, a visit downtown wouldn't be complete without touring the River Walk and visiting the Alamo. These days you can tour the River Walk by bike or even by kayak! Other activities here in San Antonio include: a visit to the Majestic Theatre, checking out the Natural Bridge Caverns and the McNay Art Museum just to name a few!
